Going to the nail salon for a manicure gets pricey. Many Waterford students have begun to manicure their own nails. This gives individuals a boost of confidence and the pride of indulging in a DIY project.
Sophomore Chloe Landry, who does her own nails, said, “When I go to the salon it is hard to express exactly what I want. I also don’t have an ongoing job, so I don’t have money to spend on nails every few weeks. Doing it myself is way cheaper and I also get to be in the comfort of my home.”
Ordering a nail kit online and learning how to do a manicure opens up so many opportunities. Kits can be bought for as little as $16.
“I bought a nail kit off of Amazon for $25 and it came with everything they use at the nail salon including 30 different colors, a UV light, drill, and many other nail accessories. I also bought some of it off of Shein, which may seem crazy, but I find that the products work well,” Landry adds.
Gel nails last much longer when compared to air-dry polish, which is a win for both going to a salon and doing it yourself. The UV/LED lamp is used to cure the gel in seconds, so less time is spent doing the nails, and significantly less is spent on worrying about messing them up.
On the other hand, going to a salon is exciting and reliable because the nail technicians are professionals who are very educated in all shapes and styles, while still ensuring safety.
Xinxia Liu, representing Q Nails & Spa, said, “The cost for a set can depend on the salon, but for us it’s $50-$80 depending on the length and design.”
Freshman Gianna Gingras expressed, “I like to get gel tips when I’m at the salon.”
Gel tips are a healthy option for nail extensions. They are lightweight, have an easy removal, and they won’t weaken your natural nails if removed properly. The nail technicians are certified professionals, so there is a much lower chance to have nail damage from the tips.
However, Acrylics are a popular alternative to gel nails. Liu added, “Acrylics make my nails stronger and they don’t rip easily. If you don’t take good care of your nails and rip them off, it could cause damage. I think they’re worth it because you can’t stop looking at them once they’re done and they make your hands look prettier.”
Sophomore Phoenix Hille mentioned, “I usually pay $60 a month to get a fill. I enjoy having them done because it’s something I’m able to look forward to and it feels like a treat for myself.”
Whether it’s getting your nails done professionally or having a salon at home, showing off your polish is a universal experience that defines girlhood.
