Time to shake your pom-poms Lancer Nation, it’s cheer season! This year, the fall cheer captains are Camille Caldrello and Gianna Serafino. The two girls are fantastic leaders for the new freshmen on the team: Jenna Dunkerley, Lauren Pitrowski, Nola Gessner and Taylor Griswold. Other notable members include sophomore Adrianna Caba, who has been impressing crowds with back tucks and other high level tricks, as well as sophomore Jamarys Olivero, who performed a series of back handsprings and was the main focus of several stunts during the home game against New London. The cheerleaders have already begun some practice for competition and will be beginning their competition season in the winter, from January to March, with a more select group of tumblers and performers. You can expect to see our Waterford High cheerleaders in front of the stands at every varsity football game this season, including both home and away games. Make sure to come out on October 28th at 6:00pm to see the team cheering for the Lancers against Windham on the WHS turf. 

Grab your sneakers and hydration because running a 3.1 miles course is not easy. The boys cross country does this every meet! This year’s team captains are seniors Luke Bartlett and Trevor Stringer. Furthermore, significant team members are senior J.P. O’Leary, juniors Xavier Del Grosso and Jay Zimmermann, and sophomores Titus Olson and Ethan Brown. For players to qualify as varsity they must be one of the top 7 finishers on the team. 

Running into the new season with Avery Pepin as the captain for the girls cross country team, the season is looking bright for them. Although the team only has 8 runners this year (need 5 to compete), they are still staying strong with a 5-2 record right now.  A couple of newcomers that are making headway are sophomore Avery Maiese and freshman Ava Lee, who are two important runners to the team this year. This past week, Avery Maiese broke the course record for the Ledyard High School cross country course. Some other strong runners that are competing for the Lancers are junior Maddie Laforte, sophomores Adeline Steinhaus, Molly Bartlett, and Gabbie Russ, and first year runner Megan Herrera. Make sure to support for the upcoming ECC Championship on Oct 20, 2022 at the Norwich Public golf course. Additionally, the team is also competing at the conference championships and Class MS at Wickham Park in Manchester, CT on Saturday, October 29.

The girls soccer team is off to a strong start this season with four wins, two losses, and a tie. Emma DeVito, Bryn Dickinson, and Marin Mahoney (the current team captains) are influencing talented and motivated team members with their hard work. WHS has a wide variety of sports teams, and our girls soccer team is definitely going to have an exciting and wonderful season. Don’t forget to come cheer and support your favorite friends and players running out on the field during future games, it’ll be a really fun experience to watch with family and friends! The home game against Stonington is being held on October 21st, and it’s definitely going to be a game you don’t want to miss! You’ll get a chance to see some hard working players like Victoria Sturm (sophomore goalkeeper) and Adyson Wiseman (freshman forward) who have contributed integral effort to the team so far. Mr. Chris, one of the coaches for the team, is looking forward to all big games in stock for the future. Credit is due to the amazing girls on our WHS soccer team!

With Elizabeth Blain, Hannah Ard, and Christina Danish as their captains, the girl’s swim team is going to be making a huge splash this year! The team is currently at a record of two wins and three losses. Some newcomers that are already making a significant mark on the season include Hannah Blomberg, who had success in the 200 IM and 100 breaststroke. Another person of note is Ava Tucker, who scored in diving for the team. Come cheer them on in their meet against Woodland on October 21st.

Waterford’s field hockey is looking forward to another season this year, being led by Coach Quilles. This year’s captains are Kameryn Mazzulli, Samantha San Juan, and Tess Briggs. The Lancers are currently 2-6 and placing 4th in the ECC. Top newcomers include juniors Samantha Silva, Kayla Kelly, and Emma Smathers, and sophomore Katie Jamroga. Key returners are Kameryn Mazzulli, Melanie Martin, Alyse Puccio, Lauren Montanari, Samantha San Juan, Katherine Knight and Lauren Santos. Coach Quiles is excited for another successful season with the Lancers. Come and visit them on their Senior Night against NFA October 19th. 

The Waterford High School unified soccer team is excited for another fun year of sports, kicking off this year with soccer. Coach Murphy is very excited for this season and the following seasons! The first Unified Soccer Tournament  is Thursday October 20th at Spera Field. The games kick off at 1:45. 

Boys soccer is off to a great season. They currently have 5 wins and 3 losses. Come support the boys soccer team on Saturday, the 22nd of October, which is also senior night. The captains are Donovan Bousquet, Matias Arcelus, and Evan Piotrowski. Some newcomers to pay attention to are Ben Dubicki and Jamison Rush.

The Waterford Lancers football team has kicked off their season. The team is led by coach, Zeth Nolda who has been the coach for 9 years overall and 2 years now as the head coach. Some of the other coaches that assist the team include Baker, Lineburgh, Mike, John, and Paul Strecker, Sousa, Cardoza, Jim Nolda, Roberts, and Wiech.The football team does not have a small group of captains but a council led by nine leaders. The council of WHS football includes Nate Hynes, Nate DePerry, Yank Faburary, Sagar Sharma, Chandler Metivier, Gian Spera, Alex Hightower, Derek Rivera, and Ayden Bousquet. Nolda emphasizes, “Every player that has come out has been a huge help, we have battled some injuries this year, and the next guys up have been impactful.  Each and every player assists with the development of the team.” The football team has dealt with many injuries from impactful players which the team as a whole has taken into accountability and played their part to help with their 3-1 record as of now. Including wins over Stonington, Rocky Hill, and New London. With only one loss to Brandford during their first game of the season on 9/9/2022. Nolda tells us that there is not just one game of the season that is the most important, but it is every next game upcoming. Which ends up being a home game vs. Ledyard on 9/14/2022. 

The Waterford Lancers volleyball team has begun an outstanding season. The coaching staff this year includes head coach Amanda Tourjee, JV coach Vanessa Kobyluck, and freshman coach Jaclyn Bono.This is the first year since the program began where the girls team has had an all female coaching staff. The captains for their team are Marina Colonis (OH), Mia Petrini (Libero), and Emma Hall (RH). New starters to the Varsity team this year include sophomore Brielle Kenney (OH), senior Mia Petrini (Libero), and senior Lillian Steinhouse (Setter). The team’s current record is 9-4. Some important games coming up in the Lancers volleyball schedule include Griswolds game this Friday 5:30 at home versus the undefeated team who has partaken in the 4 lost games by the Lancers. Along with the common WHS rivalry East Lyme this Saturday at 12 at home to take back a win due to their loss earlier in the season against them.
