Unified Bball
February 22, 2014
Unified basketball is an after school activity that takes place from early December to mid-March. Unified is an opportunity for students with disabilities to play basketball with the help of their partner athletes. It’s an enjoyable season for players, coaches, and spectators.
On Friday, February 20, Waterford Unified basketball will be hosting the Montville Indians in their season opener after school in the old gym.
Alex Rouisse a Junior who is a Unified basketball athlete explains, “I love basketball because it is fun to score baskets and steal the ball.” Later Alex stated, “the best part is getting a medal after the games and practicing with friends.”
Alex and his other teammates are coached by Special Ed teacher Colleen Lineburgh and Rik Little, a former Waterford High School physical education teacher.
Coach Lineburgh comments, “Seeing the kids out on the court having a great time is what makes it worthwhile.”
The Unified team competes in a few other events including a bowling tournament in February and an ECC Tournament at Norwich Free Academy.
