Baseball:
The boys baseball team, currently 4-1, won its season opener at Dodd Stadium again Saint Bernard. The team defeated the Saints 8-1. Senior Jordan Hamler, this year’s’ number one pitcher, allowed only one hit during the game and struck out 11 batters in six innings of play.
Sophomore Connor Lewis had two hits while Hamler had two hits and contributed 3 RBI. Junior Seth Hoagland had three hits.
South Kingstown, Rhode Island handed the team its first loss of the season 3-2, losing the game on a walk off single in the bottom of the seventh inning.
The team defeated NFA Wildcats 3-1. Hamler allowed only three hits, but hit two batters and threw a couple wild pitches.
Senior Kyle Willoughby was able to hit a single and then advance to second on steal, and score on a single by Hoagland. Jordan Hamler then hit a triple and scored on a single by senior David Zaldivar.
The boys pulled out a 3-0 win against rival New London High School. Junior pitcher Adam Goss allowed only four hits and struck out three. The game remained scoreless until the bottom of the sixth inning where Waterford scored all three of its runs. Hoagland had two doubles, a run and an RBI while sophomore Will Sherman singled and scored.
On Saturday, April 13th the lancers headed away to Ledyard where they rallied back to defeat the colonels 7-4. Sophomore Connor Lewis pitched a four-hitter with four strikeouts. He also homered, and scored twice.
Boys’ Lacrosse:
The boys’ lacrosse team opened its season on Thursday, April 4th at Bacon Academy. The boys lost to the Bobcats 9-16. Senior Ryan Brouwer had three goals and two assists while senior Andrew Nassetta added two goals and an assist.
The squad lost consecutive games to Old Saybrook, 6-8, and Stonington 3-13.
On April 11th, the team won its first against the Saint Bernard Saints. Brouwer had four goals and an assist and sophomore Michael Beltran had two goals and two assists. Senior Jeff Gran also scored twice. The team scored six unanswered goals in the second half on its way to final score of 10-4.
The squad lost to Ledyard on April 16, 13-1. Brouwer scored the solo goal for the Lancers.
Boys’ Outdoor Track:
The outdoor track team opened its season on April 3rd with a loss to Bacon Academy, 108-42. Senior brothers Chris and Jordan Jones each won two events:. Chris won the 100 dash with a time of 11.4 seconds as well as the 200 meter dash, and Jordan won the 100 hurdles and the triple jump. The Jones brothers ran with sophomore Robin Smith and senior Edwin Flores to win the 4×100, and then teamed with senior Ellis Massiah and sophomore Tony Jenne to win the 4×400. Junior Julio Gil-Martinez won the 400 meter with a time of 55.1 seconds.
On April 9th, the squad lost a close match against Plainfield 70-68. Chris Jones won the 200 and 100 meter dashes. Jordan Jones won the 100 meter hurdles, Gill won the 400 meter dash, sophomore James Keth won the 300 hurdles and junior Dan Haggan won the triple jump.
Boys’ Tennis:
The boys tennis team took its first win against the Montville Indians 7-0. Senior Matt Getty, Alan Luner, and juniors Sashwat Kala and Willie Dong all won singles matches without losing a single set. Seniors Tucker Murphy and Brett Pias won their doubles match 6-0, 6-0 while seniors James Maryeski and Sean Ryan won their doubles match 6-1, 6-0. Senior Trey Zaharek and sophomore Matthew Hausman also won their doubles match without losing a single set.
The tennis team then took on Saint Bernard, winning the match 5-2. Murphy and Pias swept their doubles match, while Hausman and Zaharek, and Maryeski and Ryan also put up wins in doubles.. Senior Matt Getty and Willie Dong won their singles matches.
The team defeated Ledyard, Stonington and Windham 7-0. With this win, not only is the team undefeated, but also gives Getty and Dong undefeated status in singles as well as defending ECC doubles champions Murphy and Pias.
