Prebiotics have become more popular in recent years. Prebiotics can be defined as “a nondigestible food ingredient that promotes the growth of beneficial microorganisms in the intestines.” Prebiotics are short-chain fatty acids, which work to improve metabolic and overall health. Ingesting probiotics stimulate the growth of good bacteria, such as lactobacillus and bifidobacterium. Prebiotics improve digestion, increase mineral absorption, regulate cholesterol levels, and strengthen the immune system.
Prebiotics are commonly found in nuts, such as cashews and almonds but also exist in leeks, chicory root, Jerusalem artichokes, barley and burdock root. All of which sound, let’s be honest, not super appetizing. This led to the creation of prebiotic drinks. Companies take clean, beneficial supplements and ingredients and make appetizing drinks such as sodas, seltzers, and plain blends.
Brands include Poppi, Olipop, Sunsip, Kevita, Culture Pop, and Live. The most popular being Olipop, with flavors like: Vintage Cola, Crisp Apple, Lemon Lime, Orange Squeeze, Cherry Cola, Cream Soda, Tropical Punch, Watermelon Lime and so much more!
Olipop includes an ingredient list on their website, with each ingredient described in detail, including health benefits, place of origin, and a link to learn more information on the ingredient.
These ingredients include, but are not limited to, cassava root, chicory root, jerusalem artichoke, nopal cactus, calendula flower, kudzu root, marshmallow root, acacia fiber, and guar fiber!
Olipop is filled with health benefits, such as high fiber, digestive health support, loads of prebiotics and an incredibly less amount of sugar than normal sodas. Olipop is vegan, paleo, gluten free and GMO free.
Olipop isn’t the only prebiotic soda gaining popularity.
Junior, Danica Agsalud says: “Poppi is so good, the first time I tried it I was at Cafe Sol, they had it in their refrigerator, and I really liked it.”
When told the ingredients, Danica was surprised and claimed, “I expected it to taste bad, but it doesn’t.”
The new spin on prebiotic drinks have made a lasting impression on many people. Creating a drink that both benefits bodily health and tastes good, prebiotic sodas are the way to go.
