On a recent episode of Saturday Night Live, a parody skit including Ariana Grande and Marcello Hernandez took the internet by storm.
This summer, the song “Espresso” by Sabrina Carpenter has blown up. It has gained 1.4 million streams on Spotify as a hit single on Carpenter’s 2024 album Short ‘n Sweet.
The skit centers around a wedding speech, sung by the bridesmaids to the tune of “Espresso”. It details their “bachelorette vacation” where the bride-to-be meets a guy named Domingo and starts hanging out with him.
Her fiance, Matt, gets upset that his bride, Kelsey, cheated on him with Domingo. Then Domingo enters the scene because he “had to explain, direct from Domingo.” This line seems to be a fan-favorite due to the TikTok videos posted to the song with captions containing various spellings of “dee-reck from doe-mingo.”
The skit has become a meme in its own right, while also contributing to the use of other memes, such as the “your honor she won’t stop singing it” meme, which appeared earlier this year.
People attending Carpenter’s tour have started referring to her “Espresso” set as the “Domingo” set. Speaking to the parody’s popularity, senior Autumn Brown’s opinion is that “the skit is so funny. And I think that the song should be put out on Spotify.”
Ariana Grande’s cameo also boosted the skit’s popularity, as voiced by Waz, the WHS French teacher, “I thought it was hilarious, loved it…I liked how Ariana Grande sang poorly for it.”
Additionally, the skit has surpassed the previously most viewed SNL skit, “Rap Roundtable,”more commonly known as “Yeet, Skrrt,” starring Timothée Chalamet and Pete Davidson. Since 2020, “Yeet, Skrrt” has gained 30 million views on YouTube while “Domingo” currently has a clip on TikTok with almost 70 million views.
Will “Domingo” stand the test of time and remain as relevant as “Yeet, Skrrt” or is it destined to fall off?
