The Inaugural Mr Lancer Pageant
April 2, 2014
On March 21, 2014, student council presented the first ever Mr. Lancer Pageant. Hosted by Kyle Chung and Annie Lion-Lee, the first annual competition was a resounding success.
Kyle said that, “Annie and I made a setlist, a written script, and organized the lighting. It wouldn’t have been so successful without the practice time put into it. The advertising appealed to the schools, which is what drew such a large crowd.”
The show started off with the group dance, which included all Mr. Lancer contestants. Immediately following was the casual wear showcase, including contestant biographies. Some outfits in this category were baseball, soccer, rock climbing, and golf apparel.
The talent portion of the show came next. The audience viewed a wide variety of talents. Some of the highlights included John Roberto’s poetry recitation, Mike Arteaga’s Napoleon Dynamite dance, and the first “promposal” of the season by Casey Collins.
After the talent portion came a quick intermission. The contestants regrouped and came back on stage for the formal wear section of the competition. Contestants wore tuxedos donated by Men’s Wearhouse. Each participant was accompanied by student escorts.
Later the judges, Ms. Ziluck, Mrs. Baumgartner, Ms. Collins, Mr. Fiorvanti, and Mr. Hauser conducted the question and answer portion of the competition. Each judge had the opportunity to ask the participants questions which ranged from, “If you were principal for the day, what is one change you would make for the school” to “What will you do if you win this competition.” Answers were extremely entertaining, including Mike Capozza’s: “If I won this competition, I’d go to Disney World.”
The contestants concluded the event by performing a couples dance with their escorts. They danced to A Little Party Never Killed Nobody. The dance was choreographed by Kristen Hanner and Bishme Shepperd.
When the pageant came to an end, John Roberto was second runner up, Bishme Sheppard runner up, and the first ever Mr. Lancer, Robert Vose, was crowned the winner.
Even weeks after the competition, Rob Vose was still feeling like royalty. After being crowned Mr. Lancer, Rob said he gained 20 twitter followers and is frequently recognized in the hallway.
Rob said that, “Being crowned the first Mr. Lancer makes me feel pretty special, however, I’m trying to not let it go to my head.” He says that when he was announced as the winner, ‘“I was so confused. I had Mike Capozza and Casey Collins next to me so I nudged both of them and said ‘it’s gonna be one of you guys.’ I wish I saw my face when my name was announced.”’
A special thank you to Mrs. Prpich, Mrs. Woznicki, Kyle Chung and Annie Lion-Lee for their hard work making the first ever Mr. Lancer Pageant possible.
