Community Events: Sept 11 Edition

Here are some upcoming community events of interest:

The Great New London Chowder Challenge: 
 The Great New London Chowder Challenge hosted by the CT Maritime Festival will feature “Chowda” samples from New London’s best chefs. Chefs will compete for the coveted titles of “Best Clam, “Best Seafood” and “Best Creative” chowder.

Vote for your favorites from restaurants such as The Seehund, Hanafin’s Pub, Gaspar’s, Chaplin’s and Friends Bistro, 2 Wives Brick Oven Pizza, The Steaming Kettle, High 5’s, Carmelo’s Italian Cafe, Muddy Waters, Monica’s State Street Diner, State Street Saloon, Thames River Greenry, Tony D’s and many more.
The event will be at the Custom House Pier in Waterfront Park, New London from 11 AM – 3PM.
The cost is $10 for 12 tickets.

Cause for Paws:

Groton Animal Foundation will be hosting Cause for Paws on Saturday, Sept. 19 from 4 – 8 PM at the Shennecossett Yacht Club. There will be a beer and wine tasting as well as hors d’oeuvres, a basket raffle, and music.

Tickets are $30 and can be purchased at Silva’s Package Store in Waterford, and Pet Supplies Plus in Groton. For more information, go to grotonanimalfoundation.org

 

I AM Music Festival:

I AM Festival 9, a free, outdoor indie musical festival, will take place on five different stages in New London on Saturday, Sept. 19 from 11:45 AM – 11:45 PM.

Bands slated for the festival are: Rubblebucket, Downtown Boys, And The Kids, Eula, Roz and the Ricecakes, Hartford Hot Several, Violent Mae, DaphneLee Martin, The Foresters, and more. Vendors will also be downtown.

A Night of Family Fun:

A Night of Family Fun, a fundraiser for Waterford Schools, will take place at the Francis X. Sweeney Field House on Saturday, September 26 at 6:30 PM.

The Harlem Wizards

(http://www.harlemwizards.com/homepage.php) will be taking on the Waterford and Friendship School staff team in an exhibition game. There will also be raffles, souvenirs, food and fun.

Tickets are currently on sale at www.harlemwizards.com, Filomena’s Restaurant, Waterford Community Center, and Waterford schools. Only 1500 tickets will be sold. Of those tickets, there will be 50 courtside and 100 reserved seats available.

Move for Massage 5K/10K Road Race: 

The Move for Massage Road Race will take place on Sunday, Sept. 27 beginning at 11:00 AM at Great Neck Elementary School.

MOVE

The race is sponsored by the Licensed Massage Therapist (LMT) Network to bring awareness to the community about the benefits of massage therapy.

Registration for the 5K costs $20 and for the 10K the cost is $30. Prizes and medals will be awarded to the first, second, and third place runners in all age divisions. The divisions are: 18 and under, 19-29, 30-39, 40-49, 50-59, and 60+. Free race t-shirt will be given to the first 100 participants. Also, if participants arrive early, they can receive pre-event massage therapy.
